1st Post In The New Year

Hi everyone,

Its been a while since I have blogged, and my God has it been extremely hot here in Melbourne.  We got up to 46 degrees at one stage and it was practically impossible to sleep.  Luckily for me, the heatwave for now is over and I'm back to making things, collecting antique textiles and whatnot.

Above we have some of the things that I've done this year.  I made 4 oya lace scarves, some eye glasses cords and a cross stitch pillow case cover with lace edging for my spare room which I have matched the colours to.

I still cant believe I now OWN these beauties.  These cloths are HUGE, and are embroidered with metal using a special technique called "Tel Kirma" in Turkish.  Each stitch is individually done and there is no moving between stitches.  You finish one stitch and then start another.  It is very pain staking and comes from the northern part of Turkey from an area called Bartin.  These 2 cloths are antiques and would've taken the woman who made them 6 months at least for each one, so I'm quite happy to have these in my collection now.

Wasp Oya

Leblebi (roasted chickpeas) Oya

Above we have some new comers to my collection.  The first one Ahiretlik Oya is from Kutahya, Turkey.  A girl makes this for her friend on her wedding day to signify that they will be friends no matter what.  We then have some bead oya scarves from Balikesir:  Zeki Muren Eyelash,  Deer Horns and Leblebi oya, while Wasp bead oya comes from Namrun.

I hope you've enjoyed reading this, my first post for the year.  Don't forget to visit my facebook page and give me a like (click HERE to be redirected to my facebook page)

Till Next time! Take care!

Ramadan, Eid, Sickness and Health?

Yes, I know.  But I have a reason so you can't be angry that its been THIS long since I've posted anything on this blog.  To begin with around (and before) Ramadan my grandmother was very sick and my aunty and I took it in turns to look after her, she had a really bad fall and started bleeding and I was absolutely pedantic so I couldnt leave her.  Anyway thank God she's all better and back to cooking now, but i still go there once a week to check on her.

Ramadan was good this year, lucky we didnt fast during daylight savings this year, and lucky for us also it was mostly cold so fasting was easy.  I spent almost every day out of the house either eating at my grandmas or eating at someones house or whatever.  Ramadans all about people coming together, so there were hardly any times that we were at home, except to sleep of course!

Eid was also good, I'm pretty certain I put back on the 2kg that I had lost, but thats to be expected.

Then after all that I thought I'd go back to my routine of working on the order for my friend (which I was told I could take my time on, but I feel bad) and just some other little things for a cousin of mine whos pregnant and having a baby girl in november, so i whipped up a couple of things for her (which I can't show on here because I know she reads my blog posts :P)  Apart from that I think everything can go back to normal now, so it shouldn't be too long before I post another blogpost again.  Oh and just before I go, I've added some new items (mainly turkish slippers and some baby items) to my etsy store if you would like to check it out, then click here.

Hope all who read this are doing well.  Until the next blogpost, Peace! xx

Where did I go??

Well well well hello all 70 of you!  Its been a while since I have blogged, and for good reason- I've had some orders!  First off I have this order (that needs to be finished by the 8th of July) for a lady in my area with 3 children and one on the way (obviously she's busier than I am!)  So she asked for all this baby stuff, and some turkish slippers and apparently shes going to make me a millionaire...we can only hope.  I have no photos of what I have made for her but I promise I'll upload some after I've finished.

Another 2 of the orders came from the same person, a lovely friend of mine who lives all the way over in Utah who wants an Igne oyasi scarf (more specifically a scarf with EFE oya on it- which are huge sun like disks) and a pack of large and small oya flowers and some leaves for an upcoming project she has.

So I'm extremely happy I have these orders, but sheesh I'm flat out!

As of late also I have uploaded some patterns to ravelry- which you can find HERE - I'm officially a "designer" woohoo!

I have also uploaded 2 new scarves onto Etsy which you can find HERE and HERE

The next oya scarf!

This is the next oya scarf I'm working on and I've just completed side one.  I really like this motif and its not taking as long as the last scarf I made (which is on ETSY so go check it out!)  This scarf is blue and white with little sticky sequins things and blue flower motifs on it.  I didn't actually have thread in dark blue so i decided to go with white and a dark shade of yellow.  I'm pretty happy with the colours I've chosen as they take your eye off the harshness of the blue.

I'm also thinking of making some bead oyas and flat oyas to sell on etsy as little packages, just for the people who dont want to buy a whole scarf.  Let me know what you think and if you think this is a good idea!

Thanks for checking out my post!

Enjoy xx

New Igne Oyasi (needle lace) Scarf ready for ETSY!

So this will be the first time I'll be selling an Igne Oyasi scarf on etsy, considering the others I have made have always been sold before I even get the chance to put one up!  All up it took me about 4 days to complete and I'm extremely happy with the end result.

Usually when I aquire a scarf ready to be adorned with oya, I assess the colours that are present on the scarf and usually I'll either use colours that match the scarf, or colours that go with the colours of the scarf but stand out more-  This is typical in turkish handicrafts, especially oya.  This scarf is brown and white with rose motifs and flowers.  I love the subtlety of this scarf and so I decided not to go with anything too eccentric and stick to more soft tones, but tones that stood out from the scarf to make it noticeable.  I think that white and lilac were perfect colours to go with this scarf.  I used dark green thread to begin with just to take your eye off the brown when you look at the scarf, then the eye moves to the lilac and notices the white.  So I think these colours were perfect to adorn this scarf with.

The last side felt like it took forever for me to finish, and I finished at 2am yesterday morning, looked at it, folded it, and went to bed haha.

This scarf is available on my ETSY page
